  • Describe new roles pharmacists have as a result of the shift from the bright line regulation to standard of care model
  • Explain three challenges faced (and met) by pharmacists who have taken on these new roles.
  • Identify four states that have successfully changed their regulations.

Nicki Chopski, PharmD, ANP, earned her PharmD from Idaho State University, College of Pharmacy in 1997.  Nicki served over 21 years as a staff pharmacist at Portneuf Medical Center.  She and partners opened a nuclear pharmacy in Southeast Idaho in 2006.  In 2007, Nicki was appointed to the Idaho Board of Pharmacy, serving for 12 years before becoming its Executive Director in 2019.  In her current role as Bureau Chief of Health Professions for the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, she serves as the Executive Officer for the Boards of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.

Navigating the AI Era in Pharmacy Practice: Challenges and Opportunities

  • Analyze the ethical, legal, and regulatory challenges associated with AI in pharmacy, focusing on patient privacy, data security, and compliance.

Timothy AungstPharmD, RPh, is a professor of pharmacy practice and a clinical pharmacist with expertise in cardiology, cardiometabolic conditions, and geriatric care. Over the past decade, he has focused on integrating technology into clinical care, evaluating 1000s of health apps, and developing frameworks to identify clinically relevant digital health tools. Aungst has served as a mentor and judge for MIT Hacking Medicine and is an advisor for the Digital Therapeutics Alliance and the Digital Medicine Society. His work includes creating standards for digital health care within the pharmacy profession and developing training modules and

Advances in Scope of Practice; Hormonal Contraception Services

  • Differentiate between legal pathways to hormonal contraception access provided by pharmacists.   
  • Identify state specific requirements that fall outside of the national standards established by the CDC for pharmacists prescribing hormonal contraceptives.   
  • Detail corresponding legal allowances and flexibilities that facilitate the ability for community pharmacists to provide access to pharmacy services with a focus on hormonal contraceptives.   
  • Discuss implementation of Massachusetts M.G.L. c. 94C, § 19F and 105 CMR 700.004(B)(15) within a community pharmacy.

John Rocchio, PharmD, RPh, earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.  He joined CVS Pharmacy in 1998 while in school, and went on to serve as a Pharmacy Manager, District Pharmacy Supervisor, Manager of Quality Process Improvement within Retail Pharmacy Operations, Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs, and currently serves as Executive Director of Public Policy under CVS Health Government Relations.  John’s experience has centered on clinical patient care, inspiring passion in others, designing and developing process enhancements, and working with state and federal regulators and lawmakers to amend and adopt laws and rules that promote the health, safety and access to pharmacy care for patients across the nation.  In addition to his CVS Health Policy role, John also sits on the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy

Aimee Dawson, PharmD, RPh, is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair for the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences- Worcester Campus.  Dr. Dawson graduated from the University of Connecticut and completed a PGY1 community residency at Holyoke Health Center, in Holyoke, MA.  Holyoke Health Center continues to serve as her clinical practice site where she precepts APPE students and PGY1 residents completing ambulatory care rotations.   Dr. Dawson’s areas of interest include diabetes, medication therapy management, reproductive health, and non-prescription medications.   She serves as the pharmacist representative on a state-wide interprofessional working group in Massachusetts charged with implementing the ACCESS law and other reproductive health regulations

Accreditation 

Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Participants of the NABP/AACP District 1-2 Meeting will receive 3.0 live contact hours (0.3 CEU), including two hours of pharmacy law.


Requirements for Credit

In order to receive credit, the participant must be present the entirety of each presentation, complete the post-tests and evaluation form on mcphsce.org for each session. Upon completion, participant credit will be reported to CPE Monitor. Transcripts may be printed from CPE Monitor. 

Credit cannot be awarded to individuals who complete the activity evaluation more than 60 days post activity. Transcripts may be printed from CPE Monitor.
